The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) congratulated former India captain MS Dhoni on being inducted into the ICC Hall of Fame during a ceremony held in London on Monday. With this honour, Dhoni becomes the 11th Indian cricketer to receive this prestigious recognition. The ICC Hall of Fame honours legendary players who have made significant contributions to the game and helped shape its legacy. According to the BCCI, a player can only be considered for induction five years after playing their last international match.
From winning India’s first T20 World Cup in 2007 with a young team to leading the country to a memorable ODI World Cup victory in 2011 at home, and adding the Champions Trophy in 2013, MS Dhoni is the only captain in cricket history to win all three ICC white-ball trophies. His calm leadership transformed tough situations into victories and made dreams a reality.
As a batsman, Dhoni changed the role of a finisher in ODIs. His unbeaten 183 against Sri Lanka in 2005 is still the highest score by a wicketkeeper in ODIs. He scored over 10,000 runs in the format with an impressive average of 50.57. Behind the stumps, Dhoni was known for his super-fast stumpings and sharp reflexes, which raised the standard of wicketkeeping in limited-overs cricket. Just like his captaincy, his unique style brought amazing results.
ICC Chairman Jay Shah said, “The ICC Hall of Fame honours the best cricketers in the game’s history. This year, we are proud to welcome seven outstanding individuals. Congratulations to all of them on this special achievement.”
On receiving the honour, Dhoni said, “Being named in the ICC Hall of Fame is a big honour. It feels great to be remembered alongside some of the greatest players in cricket history. I will always cherish this moment.”
The ICC Hall of Fame was launched in 2009 and celebrates the greatest players in the game’s history. Along with Dhoni, Hashim Amla, Matthew Hayden, Graeme Smith, and Daniel Vettori were also included in the Class of 2025.
