Shubhanshu Shukla, the first Indian to visit the International Space Station (ISS) and the second Indian to travel into space, recently shared an interesting video about how astronauts eat meals in space. In the video, he explained the special routines they must follow while eating in zero gravity.
Shukla wrote on social media platform X, “Food in space. Never thought I would have to learn to eat again. Here I am explaining why habits matter when you are eating in space. If you are not mindful, you can easily create a mess, and you don’t want to be that guy. Solid mantra that works for anything in space: ‘Slow is Fast’.”

He also shared an amazing fact about digestion. Shukla explained that humans don’t need gravity to digest food. The body uses a process called peristalsis, the contraction and relaxation of muscles, to push food through the digestive tract. This means that whether you are upside down, in space, or on Earth, your body can still digest food. “Head up or head down, gravity or no gravity, your body will always digest food. Bon appétit,” he added.
In the video, Shukla showed how difficult it is to eat and drink in space. Since things float in zero gravity, food packets and utensils are often secured with Velcro to keep them from drifting away. He was also seen sipping coffee while the liquid floated around in microgravity. At one point, he joked, “You can even eat water in space. It is fun, but you have to be careful because things can go all around, and you have to be mindful.”
He ended the video by saying, “This is a short clip about food in space.” After he posted the video, social media users shared their excitement in the comments. One user wrote, “Nice. These videos are always so much fun to see. Awesome to hear it in an accent I can relate to as well, sir.”
Another commented, “That’s fascinating! I had no idea digestion worked without gravity. The ‘Slow is Fast’ mantra makes perfect sense to avoid a floating food disaster.” Many others also praised him, saying it was fun for them to watch, even though eating in space looks very challenging.
