Actor-turned-politician Shatrughan Sinha has kicked a row by  supporting a nationwide ban on non-vegetarian food. His remarks came as he praised Uttarakhand for implementing the Uniform Civil Code (UCC), the first Indian state to do so.

Talking to the media persons outside Parliament, Sinha said that though there is a beef ban in a few parts of the country, he feels all types of non-vegetarian food should be banned. Though he said such laws are quite difficult to implement.

"Beef has been banned in many parts of the country. I think that not only beef, but non-vegetarian food in general should be banned in the country," he stated. Pointing out inconsistencies in the law, he added, “However, in some places, it is still legal to consume beef, including the northeast. Waha khao toh yummy, par humare North India mein khao toh mummy (It is okay to eat it in the northeast, but not in North India).”

He added, "But this is not going to work, a ban should be enforced everywhere, not just in certain parts.
