Fauja Singh, widely known as the "Turbaned Tornado," passed away at the age of 114. He died after being hit by a speeding car in his native village, Beas, in Punjab on July 14. He was out for a walk on the side of the Jalandhar-Pathankot highway around 3:30 pm when the accident happened.

Fauja Singh was born on April 1, 1911, in Punjab. As a child, he was very weak and couldn’t walk properly until he was five. He worked as a farmer before moving to London in 1992 after his wife passed away. In 1994, after his son’s death, he started jogging to deal with his sadness. At 89, he took running seriously and ran his first marathon in London, finishing in 6 hours and 54 minutes.

At 100, he set eight world records in one day in Canada, including running 100 meters in 23 seconds! Just three days later, he became the first person over 100 to complete a marathon, finishing the Toronto race in over 8 hours.
He ran in many marathons around the world, including London, New York, and Mumbai. His fastest marathon time was 5 hours and 40 minutes at age 92.

Fauja Singh was also known for promoting peace and Sikh culture. In 2003, he received the Ellis Island Medal of Honour in the US. He was featured in ads with David Beckham and Muhammad Ali and was even in a PETA campaign.

He retired from running at 101 after a final 10 km race in Hong Kong. He also carried the Olympic torch in London in 2012 and got a special birthday wish from Queen Elizabeth II when he turned 100. Fauja Singh inspired millions around the world and will always be remembered for his courage, spirit, and love for running.
