Anurag Bajpayee, the Indian-origin CEO of Gradient, a clean water startup, has been detained in the US for allegedly visiting high-end brothels. According to the New York Post, his name appeared in court documents in Boston, where he was accused of paying large amounts to $600 per hour for sex earlier this year.
Prosecutors say he was part of a private group of clients that included doctors, lawyers, government workers, and public officials. The investigation revealed that the women involved, many of them Asian, may have been victims of sex trafficking.
While some employees have asked him to step down, Gradiant has supported him so far. The company released a statement saying it trusts the legal process and remains committed to its goals.
“We trust the legal system and believe things will work out in the end. This situation is separate from our work, and Gradient will continue to focus on innovation and our goal of providing clean water for everyone,” the company said in a statement.
