The Election Commission of India has announced that the Vice Presidential election will take place on September 9, following the resignation of Jagdeep Dhankhar, who stepped down from the post due to health concerns.

As per the official schedule, the last date to file nominations is August 21, and voting will be held on September 9, with results declared the same day. The Ministry of Home Affairs issued a notification confirming the vacancy on July 22, 2025. As per constitutional guidelines, the election to fill the vacant post must be conducted promptly. The person elected will serve a full five-year term starting from the day they assume office.

Jagdeep Dhankhar, who assumed the role of Vice President in 2022, resigned at the age of 74 after chairing the opening day of the Monsoon Session in the Rajya Sabha. In his resignation letter to President Droupadi Murmu, he stated, "To prioritise health care and follow medical advice, I hereby resign as the Vice President of India, effective immediately, under Article 67(a) of the Constitution." The letter was made public by the Vice President's Office shortly after.

With the Vice President’s position now vacant, the Election Commission has moved swiftly to initiate the process for electing a new candidate. According to the Presidential and Vice-Presidential Elections Act, 1952, the Vice President is elected by an electoral college comprising members of both Houses of Parliament.

The Commission assured that the entire election process will be conducted in a free and fair manner, following all required protocols. This will be the 17th Vice-Presidential Election in the country’s history.
