The US has formally announced an additional 25% tariff on imports from India, which will come into effect at 12:01 am (EST) on August 27.

The notice, released by the Department of Homeland Security through US Customs and Border Protection (CBP), said the move implements President Donald Trump’s Executive Order 14329, signed on August 6. The order directs US agencies to counter “threats from the Government of the Russian Federation,” with India being targeted for new duties under this policy.

The CBP said the tariffs will apply to many Indian products listed in the order and will cover any goods that arrive in the US or are taken out of warehouses after the deadline.

Trump targets Moscow’s trade partners

President Trump has also hinted at more tariffs and possible sanctions on countries that continue trading with Russia. Warning of “very big consequences” in the coming weeks, he said further action would depend on whether any progress is made in negotiations. So far, the US has stopped short of imposing similar measures on other big buyers of Russian oil, including China.

India’s stern response

In August, Washington had already raised the total duty on Indian goods to 50%, penalising New Delhi for its continued purchase of Russian oil. India has strongly opposed the move, calling these secondary tariffs “unfair, unjustified, and unreasonable.”

Officials in New Delhi have expressed hope that progress in peace talks could ease the tariff burden, but warned that India will do whatever is needed to protect its national interest.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, addressing a rally in Ahmedabad, said India would not bow to external pressure. “No matter how much pressure comes, we will keep increasing our strength to withstand it. Today, the Atmanirbhar Bharat Abhiyan is gaining energy from Gujarat, backed by two decades of hard work,” he said.

India has labelled the US tariff escalation “extremely unfortunate” but signalled it is prepared to strengthen domestic capacity and diversify trade avenues while defending its strategic choices.
