Just hours after raising tariffs on Indian goods to 50%, U.S. President Donald Trump warned that more sanctions could follow, targeting India’s continued purchase of oil from Russia. The increased tariffs are set to take effect on August 27.

Trump made these remarks while speaking to reporters, saying, “It’s only been eight hours. So, let’s see what happens.” When asked why India was being targeted while countries like China also continue to import Russian oil, Trump replied, “You’re going to see a lot more. You’re going to see so many secondary sanctions.”

The U.S. has been pressuring countries to cut economic ties with Russia ever since it invaded Ukraine. When asked if these new tariffs on India might be lifted if a peace deal between Russia and Ukraine is reached, Trump said, “We will determine that later.”

India calls tariff hike ‘unfair and unjustified’

India strongly condemned the U.S. decision, calling the tariff hike “unfair, unjustified, and unreasonable.” In a statement, the Ministry of External Affairs said, “The United States has in recent days targeted India’s oil imports from Russia. We have already made clear our position, our imports are based on market factors and are essential for ensuring the energy security of 1.4 billion people.”

The ministry added, “India will take all necessary steps to protect its national interest. The U.S. decision is extremely unfortunate and goes against the principles of mutual respect and strategic partnership.”

India has consistently defended its energy ties with Russia, citing national interest, affordable pricing, and the need to secure long-term energy supplies.

Trump hints at possible tariffs on China, too

Trump also hinted at the possibility of imposing similar tariffs on China, saying, “It may happen… One of them could be China.”

This comes just as Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi is preparing for his first visit to China in over seven years, amid strained relations with the United States. Trump said further secondary sanctions are likely, aimed at increasing pressure on Russia to end the war in Ukraine.
