In Uttar Pradesh's Pilibhit, a family has claimed that their two-day-old baby died because expired glucose was given during treatment at a district hospital's newborn care unit (SNCU).The baby's mother, Radha Singh, had a normal delivery at home on January 27. The next day, the baby was taken to the hospital as he stopped breastfeeding.
The newborn was admitted to the SNCU ward, but his condition was critical. As his health worsened, doctors advised transferring him to Lucknow for advanced care. Sadly, the baby’s condition deteriorated on the way, and he passed away in the ambulance.
The family has accused the hospital staff of negligence, claiming that an expired IV bottle was used in the treatment of the newborn at the SNCU ward. A police complaint was filed, and the baby's body was sent for a post-mortem to determine the exact cause of death.
The infant's uncle told India Today TV that the IV bottle used for the baby had expired in May 2024.The incident sparked a large protest outside the district hospital. The family, along with locals, expressed their anger by bringing the baby’s body to the hospital, with the expired glucose bottle and drip still attached to the child's hand.
In response to the growing protest, the Chief Medical Officer of Pilibhit, Alok Kumar, confirmed that an inquiry committee has been set up to investigate the case. According to initial findings, two staff nurses, Preeti Jaiswal and Pushpa Mishra, have been suspended. The investigation into the matter is still ongoing.
