The Union Cabinet gave its approval to the 'one nation, one election' proposal, according to sources. The government is expected to introduce a comprehensive bill on the matter next week during the ongoing Winter Session of Parliament.

Earlier, on Wednesday, Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan strongly advocated for 'one nation, one election', arguing that the frequent elections were hindering the country's progress.

At the International Gita Festival in Kurukshetra, Chouhan remarked that under Prime Minister Narendra Modi's leadership, the country is advancing at a fast pace.

He added that under the Prime Minister's leadership, a glorious, prosperous, and powerful India is being shaped. "Soon, India will emerge as the 'Vishwa Guru' (world leader) right before our eyes. There is no doubt about it, and the entire world is aware of it.”

However, he pointed out that there is one major obstacle to India’s progress and development: the frequent elections. He emphasized that regardless of other activities in the country, election preparations go on for twelve months every five years.

Chouhan further stated, "When the Lok Sabha elections are over, the Assembly elections follow. Haryana, Jammu and Kashmir, Maharashtra, and Jharkhand have already held their elections, and now the Delhi Assembly elections are approaching."

With its 'one nation, one election' initiative, the government in September approved the recommendations of the high-level committee to conduct simultaneous elections for the Lok Sabha, state assemblies, and local bodies in a phased manner.

According to the report of IANS, the Narendra Modi government is progressing with its 'one nation, one election' initiative and plans to introduce a bill in Parliament during the current session.

The Cabinet has already endorsed the Ram Nath Kovind Committee's report on the proposal, which calls for conducting simultaneous elections nationwide.
