As Delhi Assembly elections approaches, Arvind Kejriwal, leader of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), made a major announcement for the city's auto drivers. On Tuesday, during his visit to the Kondli constituency, Kejriwal declared a plan to provide Rs 10 lakh insurance coverage to auto drivers. He also pledged Rs 1 lakh in financial assistance for auto drivers to support the marriages of their daughters.
Kejriwal made this announcement after a visit where he had lunch with the family of an auto driver in the area. He shared his thoughts on social media, saying, "My relationship with the auto driver brothers is very close to my heart. Yesterday, I invited them to my house for tea, and we had a long conversation. One brother even invited me for a meal at his home. Today, I'm going to his house for lunch. This bond started from Ramlila Maidan and remains as strong as ever."
Kejriwal posted an old photo of himself and Manish Sisodia putting up AAP posters on an auto-rickshaw. He wrote, "This is a very old picture from when we just started the party. Manish and I used to stick posters on the back of every auto. Since then, auto drivers have always supported us."
Kejriwal announced new benefits for auto drivers as part of his party's election promises. He said that auto drivers would receive Rs 2,500 twice a year as a uniform allowance. Kejriwal also assured that the children of auto drivers would be given free coaching.
He also promised to relaunch the 'PoochO' app, which allows people to access the contact details of registered auto drivers and book rides directly. The app was developed by the Delhi Integrated Multi-Model Transit System.
The Delhi Assembly elections are scheduled for February next year, and the AAP is focused on retaining power for a third consecutive term, facing competition from the BJP and Congress.
