The Guruvayur Sree Krishna Temple in Kerala conducted extensive purification rituals on Tuesday after a non-Hindu woman vlogger, Jasmin Jaffer, allegedly entered the temple pond and filmed a reel. The incident sparked controversy, as the pond is considered sacred and is meant exclusively for use by the temple priests before entering the sanctum sanctorum.
Temple authorities confirmed that the sanctum sanctorum will reopen for devotees only after 5 pm today, following the completion of the rituals. The Guruvayur Temple, located in the town of Guruvayur, is dedicated to Lord Guruvayurappan and is considered one of the most sacred temples in Kerala.
Jasmin Jaffer, a former Bigg Boss contestant and social media influencer, had entered the temple pond six days ago and filmed a reel in which she was washing her feet. According to the temple officials, her actions violated temple rituals and the sanctity of the pond. Non-Hindus are traditionally not allowed inside the temple premises, making the incident a serious breach of temple protocols.
In response, the temple conducted a special purification ceremony, which included a repeat of six days of puja, comprising 18 pujas and 18 sheevelis, to restore the sanctity of the sacred pond. Authorities have asked devotees to observe temporary restrictions until the rituals are fully completed.
Meanwhile, the Devaswom Board has filed a formal complaint with the Guruvayur Temple Police against Jasmin Jaffer. The complaint highlights that the vlogger violated the sanctity of the temple pond and breached the High Court’s prohibition on photography and videography in restricted areas of the temple. Police have confirmed that a case will be registered following the court’s directions.
Temple authorities emphasised the importance of following traditional rules and respecting religious spaces, urging visitors and devotees to adhere to temple norms. The incident has reignited discussions on the responsibility of social media influencers when visiting sacred sites.
