A video has surfaced online showing government school students in Karnataka's Bilagerehundi village of Varuna constituency collecting water from a sump to clean the school toilet. The incident has raised serious concerns about student safety and the responsibilities assigned to children within school premises. The incident reportedly took place around 20 days ago and has only recently come to the attention of education authorities.
In the video, students can be heard saying that their teachers instructed them to bring water and pour it into the toilet. One child is seen climbing into the sump while another holds a bucket nearby. The task, which should have been handled by school staff, was carried out by the children, leading to questions about negligence and the school’s management practices.
The issue came to light after a parent filed a complaint with the Block Education Officer (BEO). The complaint was forwarded to the Deputy Director of Public Instruction (DDPI), who has now formed an inquiry committee to investigate the matter.
The inquiry team is scheduled to visit the school today for inspection and to re ord statements. The DDPI has said that strict action will be taken if the investigation finds the headmaster or any staff members responsible. This may include disciplinary measures or dismissal from service.
The school has around 130 students and offers classes from first to seventh standard. Parents and local residents have expressed concern, stating that students should not be assigned tasks that compromise their safety or dignity. Many believe that such responsibilities should be handled by qualified staff and not young children.
