Indira Gandhi International Airport in Delhi will have major disruptions from January 19 to January 26, 2025. The airport will be closed to flights for 145 minutes each day, between 10:20 AM and 12:45 PM. This is to allow time for preparations for Republic Day celebrations, including practicing the flypast and other related activities.
Impact on flights
This yearly closure will impact over 1,300 flights at the airport. Many airlines will have to change their flight schedules during this time. The airport authority, DIAL, has informed passengers that no flights, including special or private flights, will be allowed to take off or land between 10:00 AM and 1:15 PM. Passengers are advised to check their flight times regularly to avoid any problems.
Weather-related challenges
The situation is made worse by the ongoing fog in Delhi, which has already caused many flights to be delayed or cancelled. Recently, more than 400 flights were delayed because it was hard to see clearly, and some flights were redirected to other airports. Officials have warned that the fog, along with the planned airport closures, could cause even more delays and make it harder to manage flights during this busy time.
Traffic restrictions during Republic Day preparations
Apart from the flight disruptions, there will also be traffic restrictions in central Delhi during Republic Day preparations. Important roads around Kartavya Path will be closed or only allow limited access at certain times. People travelling in these areas should plan ahead to avoid delays.
The Republic Day celebrations on January 26 will feature a big military parade and cultural performances. French President Emmanuel Macron will be the special guest for this year’s event. Passengers and travellers are encouraged to stay updated to avoid any travel problems.
