Rapido, the popular bike-taxi app, is planning to launch its food delivery service in India. This could create strong competition for current market leaders like Swiggy and Zomato. According to reports, Rapido will offer much lower commission rates to restaurants. This means restaurants will pay Rapido less for each order, which could help small and local food businesses earn more.

Rapido has signed a deal with the National Restaurant Association of India (NRAI), which represents over 5 lakh restaurants across the country. The company is expected to test its food delivery service in Bengaluru by late June or early July. Rapido is likely to charge restaurants a commission of only 8–15% per order. In comparison, Swiggy and Zomato charge 16–30%. Rapido may also charge a fixed delivery fee-₹25 for orders below ₹400 and ₹50 for orders above ₹400.

NRAI President Sagar Daryani said they have been in talks with Rapido for a few months. He added that they want a food delivery system that is better for restaurants and helps them connect directly with their customers.

Other apps that joined food delivery

Other companies like Ola and Uber have also tried entering the food delivery business. Ola launched "Ola Cafe" in 2015 and later bought Foodpanda India in 2017. Ola has now re-entered the space through ONDC, a government-supported digital platform.

Uber also launched its food delivery service, Uber Eats, in India in 2017. However, it couldn't keep up with the competition and later exited the market. Uber sold its food delivery business to Zomato and, in return, got a 10% stake in Zomato as part of the deal.

Rapido, on the other hand, is confident about its entry into the market. The company promises fast deliveries at affordable prices. Right now, Rapido offers several services such as bike rides, auto rides, auto share, parcel delivery, and cab services (economy and premium).
