The Punjab government has announced that all schools, colleges, universities, and polytechnic institutes across the state will remain closed until September 7, 2025, due to the severe flood situation. The announcement was made by Education Minister Harjot Singh Bains on Wednesday.

Talking to X, Bains said the decision was taken under the directions of Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann. “As directed by Hon'ble CM Punjab Shree Bhagwant Singh Mann Ji, in view of the flood situation, all govt/aided/recognised & private schools, colleges, universities & polytechnics across Punjab will remain closed till 7th Sept 2025. Everyone is requested to strictly follow the local administration's guidelines,” he wrote.

Earlier, the state government had declared holidays in schools and colleges till September 3, but with the situation worsening, the closure has been extended further. The flood crisis in Punjab has been triggered by the swelling of major rivers, including the Sutlej, Beas, and Ravi, along with several seasonal rivulets.

The rise in water levels is a result of heavy rains in the catchment areas of Himachal Pradesh and Jammu and Kashmir. Punjab itself has also experienced heavy rainfall, worsening the condition. The floods have affected large parts of the state, with reports of widespread damage to houses, agricultural land, and infrastructure. Official figures state that at least 30 people have lost their lives so far, and over 3.5 lakh people have been impacted by the disaster.

Rescue and relief operations are underway in the worst-hit districts, with the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), and local administration working around the clock to evacuate stranded people and provide relief supplies. Authorities have urged people to remain cautious and follow safety guidelines issued by the administration. With the state still battling rising waters, the government’s priority remains saving lives and ensuring essential relief to those in need.
