Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to inaugurate the redeveloped Mata Tripura Sundari temple in Udaipur, southern Tripura, on Monday, 22 September 2025. The temple is one of the 51 Shakti Peethas revered by Hindus and holds significant religious and cultural importance.

Before visiting Tripura, the Prime Minister will lay the virtual foundation stone for 13 development projects worth over Rs 5,127 crore in Itanagar, the capital of Arunachal Pradesh. He will then arrive in Agartala, the capital of Tripura, in the afternoon and travel by helicopter to Udaipur, the district headquarters of Gomati, located about 65 km south of Agartala, to inaugurate the redeveloped temple.

Authorities have planned a 12-kilometre roadshow from Palatana helipad to the temple, with strict security arrangements in place. After inaugurating the temple and the beautified surroundings, PM Modi will perform a puja at the Kali temple before returning to Agartala and leaving for Delhi. There is no public address scheduled during this visit.

This will be PM Modi’s 11th visit to Tripura and the second visit to the Tripura Sundari temple since he became Prime Minister in 2014. He had previously offered puja at the temple on April 7, 2019, and his last visit to Tripura was on April 17, 2024, during the Lok Sabha elections.

Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha, who visited Udaipur and the temple twice in the past two weeks to supervise preparations, invited the Prime Minister to inaugurate the redeveloped temple and the surrounding area. CM Saha shared a video of the temple on his official social media account, describing the temple’s new infrastructure as “enchanting” and a reflection of the government’s respect and devotion toward the deity.

The 524-year-old temple has been redeveloped under the PRASHAD scheme of the Union Tourism Ministry at a cost of over Rs 52 crore, with the Tripura government contributing an additional Rs 7 crore. Built in 1501 by Maharaja Dhanya Manikya, the temple is a historic landmark and a symbol of Tripura’s rich cultural heritage.

It is the third Shakti Peetha in eastern India, after the Kali temple in Kolkata and the Kamakhya temple in Guwahati.
The Prime Minister’s inauguration of the redeveloped temple highlights its religious and cultural importance for the people of Tripura and India.
