Early Wednesday morning, India began a military operation called Operation Sindoor. This operation was carried out by the Indian Army, Navy, and Air Force together. The goal was to target places where terrorists were hiding or keeping weapons in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK).
This is the largest and most detailed mission India has done across the border since the Balakot strike in 2019.
The action was in response to a terrorist attack on April 22 in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir. In that attack, 26 innocent people died, including an Indian Navy officer and a man from Nepal.
The group behind the attack is said to be Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT), a terror group based in Pakistan. Reports say this group gets money and help from the Pakistani government.
India used modern and smart weapons to make sure the attacks were accurate and only hit the right places. Some of the weapons used were:
SCALP (Storm Shadow) Missile: The SCALP missile, also called Storm Shadow, is a cruise missile that is launched from the air and can travel over 250 kilometres. It is built to hit targets deep inside enemy areas with high accuracy.
HAMMER Bombs(Highly Agile Modular Munition Extended Range): The HAMMER smart bomb was used to hit strong structures like reinforced bunkers and multi-storey buildings that were being used as training and supply centres by LeT and Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM). This bomb is guided with high precision and can strike targets from a distance of 50 to 70 kilometres, depending on how high it is launched.
Loitering Munitions: Loitering munitions, also called "kamikaze drones," were used for watching target areas, spotting threats, and carrying out final attacks. These drones can fly around a specific area and then, either on their own or with remote control, find and destroy targets.
India has not released all the details of the mission yet, but it is being seen as a strong message against terrorism. More information is expected in the coming days.
