During recent communal violence in Nagpur, an FIR at Ganeshpeth Police Station discllosed that an on-duty woman police officer was allegedly molested by a group of rioters. The report also mentioned that these rioters were shouting provocative slogans to incite communal tension, and a total of 51 people have been named in the FIR.

According to the FIR accessed by India Today TV on Wednesday, the accused grabbed the woman officer's uniform and attempted to touch her inappropriately. The officer, who is a member of the Rapid Control Police (RCP) squad deployed at the scene, immediately reported the incident to her senior officials. After her complaint, a formal case was filed against those involved.

With the molestation charges, the complaint states that the accused also harassed other women police officers at the scene by making obscene gestures and lewd comments, trying to intimidate them. The violence started in central Nagpur's Chitnis Park, Mahal area on Monday, after rumours spread that a community's holy book had been desecrated during a protest by a right-wing group demanding the removal of Mughal emperor Aurangzeb's tomb in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar district. The situation quickly escalated, with stones being thrown at the police and leaving 34 officers injured.

About the violence

Cases have also been filed against some office-bearers from Vishwa Hindu Parishad and Bajrang Dal for allegedly hurting religious sentiments during their protest. While the law and order situation in Nagpur is now under control, a curfew remains in place in several sensitive areas.
