A major incident took place on Monday when the coupling of the Odisha-bound Nandan Kanan Express broke in Chandauli, Uttar Pradesh. The train split into two parts, causing panic among passengers.

The coupling is a chain and hook mechanism that connects two coaches or wagons in a train. Fortunately, no one was injured in the incident.

Train delayed further

The train was already running more than three hours late when the incident occurred near the Pandit Deen Dayal Upadhyaya (DDU) Junction. It was traveling from Delhi to Puri when two of its coaches, S4 and S5, became detached. The affected coaches were then brought to DDU Junction, where passengers were shifted to another coach.

A passenger on the train recalled the frightening moment. "We thought that some big incident had happened. Luckily the speed of the train was slow, so no one was hurt," he said.

Issue resolved after our hours: Railway officials worked to resolve the problem, but it took more than four hours before the train was able to continue its journey.

Past similar incidents

Last year, a railway employee lost their life at Barauni Junction in Bihar while uncoupling a train. Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw later stated that the accident happened due to "miscommunication" between railway staff.

The latest incident highlights the need for better maintenance and safety measures in Indian Railways.
