An ammonia gas leak was reported at the Mahananda Dairy plant in Goregaon (East), Mumbai, on Wednesday night, triggering a swift emergency response. According to a report by The Times of India, the incident occurred around 9:12 pm, when ammonia began leaking from a large tank situated within the dairy’s refrigeration unit.
The tank in question had a capacity of 3,000 kilograms and was housed in a ground-floor unit spanning approximately 2,000 square feet. Civic officials investigating the matter stated that the leak was traced to a faulty valve in the refrigeration system. The leakage led to the release of pungent ammonia fumes, which can be hazardous to health and cause respiratory distress upon exposure.
As soon as the leak was detected, emergency protocols were activated. The Mumbai Fire Brigade quickly reached the site, accompanied by the city’s Police department, a specialised HAZMAT (hazardous materials) unit, 108 ambulance services, and staff from the local municipal ward office. Their coordinated response aimed to contain the leak, secure the area, and ensure public safety.
Officials monitored the surrounding area to check for any impact on residents or workers nearby. Fortunately, there were no immediate reports of injuries or hospitalisations. The faulty valve was eventually isolated and repaired, helping bring the situation under control. Authorities are expected to carry out a thorough inspection of the plant to prevent any future incidents.
