This year, Mumbai's Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA) will begin renovating Terminal 1 to boost its capacity by handling 20 million more passengers annually. To accommodate travellers during the renovation, passengers will be directed to Terminal 2 at CSMIA and the newly constructed Navi Mumbai International Airport.
Once the redevelopment is completed, Terminal 1 is expected to accommodate 20 million more passengers, marking a 42 per cent increase in its current capacity, according to an official statement from Mumbai International Airport Limited (MIAL).
As per the official statement, the project is set to begin in a phased approach starting in November 2025. The first phase will focus on demolishing the existing structure, after which the construction of the new terminal will commence.
The Mumbai International Airport Limited (MIAL) stated, "In November 2025, the transformation of Terminal 1 will proceed in carefully planned phases, ensuring minimal disruption. During construction, Terminal 2 (T2) will handle the additional traffic."
The renovation of Terminal 1 is expected to be completed by 2029, with Phase II involving the construction of a new terminal alongside modernizing the existing one. This phase is projected to take three years.
The Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA) is operated by MIAL and managed by Adani Airport Holdings Ltd (AAHL).
The official statement reads that the upgrade of Terminal 1 will happen along with expanding the current Passenger Terminal Building to handle more domestic passengers at the airport.
There is also the possibility of merging with international operations in the future. The upgrade phase promises significant improvements, including the addition of landscaping for cooling, multipurpose substations, and an upgraded baggage handling system.
