A heartbreaking video has surfaced from the Air India plane crash site in Ahmedabad, showing a mother’s desperate attempt to save her son. The tragic incident took place on Thursday when a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner crashed into the canteen of a medical college, just seconds after taking off from Ahmedabad airport, located two kilometres away.
The crash killed 241 people on board the plane, including 230 passengers, 10 crew members, and 2 pilots. Many people on the ground were also killed. Only one person survived.
One of the victims was a 15-year-old boy named Akash Patni. He had stepped out to deliver a tiffin to his mother, Sitaben, who was working at a tea stall nearby. When the crash happened, it caused a huge fire in the area. In the video, Sitaben is seen panicking as she realises her son was near the crash site.
She runs around asking people for help. When no one steps forward, she tries to go in herself to save him. Sadly, she could not reach him. Akash did not survive the fire. Sitaben was injured and taken to the hospital.
The same video also shows the only survivor, Vishwash Kumar Ramesh, walking out from the crash site. Thick black smoke surrounds him as he walks out in a white T-shirt, holding his phone.
"I don't know how I came out of it alive. For a while, I thought I was about to die. But when I opened my eyes, I saw I was alive. And I opened my seat belt and got out of there. The hostess and aunty and uncle all died before my eyes," he told Doordarshan.
Mr Ramesh, a 40-year-old British Indian, was sitting next to the emergency exit in seat 11A. He was rescued by local people and taken to the hospital.
DNA testing is now being done to identify the dead and return their bodies to their families.
