Maharashtra’s Transport Minister Pratap Sarnaik has become the first person in India to own a Tesla Model Y, which he received on Friday from Tesla’s newly opened showroom at Mumbai’s Bandra Kurla Complex. This marks a significant moment as Tesla officially begins its sales in India.
Sarnaik explained that he bought the car not just for personal use but as a step to spread awareness about electric vehicles (EVs) in the country. He shared that his decision was guided by the idea of setting an example for the younger generation. In fact, he said he plans to gift the Tesla to his grandson as a symbolic gesture, so children can learn early about the importance of sustainable and green mobility.
“I purchased the Tesla to raise awareness about electric vehicles among people, especially youngsters. The cost may be high right now, but what matters is setting the right example and speeding up EV adoption,” Sarnaik said.
He also pointed out that Maharashtra is working to lead India’s EV transition over the next decade, in line with the Prime Minister’s clean mobility vision. The state government has already introduced several incentives, including toll exemptions for EVs on the Atal Setu and the Samruddhi Expressway. Also, the Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC) has procured nearly 5,000 electric buses, with charging stations being installed across the state to support the growing demand.
Currently, the Tesla Model Y is the only Tesla model available in India. It comes in two versions: the standard Rear-Wheel Drive, priced at ₹60 lakh, and the Long Range Rear-Wheel Drive, priced at ₹68 lakh. The Long Range model offers a driving range of up to 622 km and can go from 0 to 100 km/h in just 5.6 seconds, making it the more performance-focused option.
Sarnaik’s purchase, therefore, is more than just a luxury buy, it is intended as a move to promote awareness, inspire citizens, and push forward India’s electric vehicle journey.
