Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav let five cheetahs out of their enclosures into the open forest at Kuno National Park in Sheopur district. One of them, a female cheetah named Veera, had given birth to two cubs just a day before.

Other cheetahs released included a female cheetah named Asha and her three cubs. Two more cheetahs, Agni and Vayu, had already been set free on December 4, 2024, which was International Cheetah Day.

Mr. Yadav posted pictures from the national park on the social media platform X. He shared his happiness about the cheetahs running freely in the wild.

“Today in Palpur-Kuno National Park, female cheetah ‘Asha,’ female cheetah ‘Veera,’ who recently gave birth to cubs, and three cubs of ‘Asha’ were released from a big enclosure into the open forest. On this occasion, a review was also conducted with the officials regarding the cheetah project,” he wrote.

He also spoke about the success of the project, highlighting how cheetahs, once extinct in Asia, are now thriving again in Madhya Pradesh.

More cheetahs are to arrive soon

With the birth of Veera’s cubs, there are now 26 cheetahs living in Kuno National Park. The park first got cheetahs when eight of them were brought from Namibia and released by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on September 17, 2022.

Officials have said that six to eight more cheetahs will soon come from South Africa. These cheetahs will be moved to Gandhinagar Wildlife Sanctuary in Mandsaur district. The exact date is not decided yet, but the transfer is expected to happen before April 2025.

Madhya Pradesh is working to protect wildlife and increase the number of cheetahs, making sure they survive for future generations.
