India's Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) strongly criticised the arrest and denial of bail to Hindu religious leader Chinmoy Krishna Das Prabhu. The MEA also called on the Bangladesh government to take steps to protect Hindus, who are a minority in the country, and ensure their safety.
The remark by MEA came after Chinmoy Krishna Das Prabhu protested against the violence on Hindus in Bangladesh for which he got arrested by the Dhaka Police’s Detective Branch on November 25 at the Dhaka airport.
The MEA urged the Bangladesh government to protect Hindus and all minorities, ensuring their right to peacefully assemble and express themselves. In an official statement, the ministry pointed out that Prabhu's arrest comes after a series of attacks on Hindus and other minority groups by extremist groups in Bangladesh.
The MEA also pointed to several reports of violence, including the burning and looting of minority homes and businesses, as well as the destruction of temples and religious idols. It also expressed concerns over the attacks on the religious minority group members protesting peacefully for the release of Prabhu.
Chinmoy Krishna Das Prabhu has been a long-time member of the International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON) and served as its spokesperson. He had frequently spoken out against violence and religious discrimination faced by Hindus in Bangladesh.
ISKCON officials praised the Indian government's response, especially the Ministry of External Affairs' condemnation of Prabhu's arrest. Radharaman Das, Vice President of ISKCON, expressed gratitude to the MEA for taking a stand against Prabhu's detention.
Radharaman Das, Vice President of ISKCON, said, "He is being treated like a terrorist and targeted because he became a prominent figure in the Hindu protests in Bangladesh. He organized several peaceful protests against the atrocities faced by Hindus."
He said the sedition case against Prabhu is "false" and marked out that he was not given any reason for his arrest at the airport. Earlier, the ISKCON temple authorities urged the Bangladesh government to release Prabhu immediately, emphasizing that they are a peace-loving Bhakti movement.
A court in Bangladesh denied bail to Chinmoy Krishna Das Prabhu and upheld the sedition case filed against him. The charges were allegedly related to his outspoken support for minority rights in the country.
After the court's decision, large protests sparked in Dhaka and other parts of Bangladesh, with demonstrators demanding Prabhu's immediate release. Videos from the protests showed crowds gathered in Dhaka and Chittagong, and members of the Hindu community also staged protests in Shahbagh against the arrest of the Hindu monk.
