India has closed the Suchetgarh border in Jammu for civilians after a deadly terror attack in Pahalgam, which killed 26 people. The Border Security Force (BSF) has stopped all civilian movement at the Octroi Post in Suchetgarh.

This decision comes just days after the BSF also reduced the size of the daily retreat ceremonies at Attari, Hussainiwala, and Sadki borders in Punjab. A similar ceremony takes place at Suchetgarh. These changes show “India’s serious concern over cross-border hostilities and reaffirm that peace and provocation can’t coexist.”

The terror attack in Baisaran Valley, also known as the ‘mini-Switzerland’ of Pahalgam, left 25 tourists and one local dead. Following the attack, India blamed Pakistan for “cross-border terrorism” and took strong steps in response.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi gave a strong message to terrorists and their supporters. He said, “We will pursue them to the ends of the Earth.” He also promised to “identify, track and punish every terrorist and their backer”.

Three terrorists have been identified by the police in connection with the attack.

India has already suspended the Indus Waters Treaty with Pakistan, closed the Attari land border, downgraded diplomatic relations, and cancelled all visas for Pakistanis.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah is expected to hold an important meeting soon to decide the future of the Indus Waters Treaty, which was signed in 1960 between India and Pakistan.
