Nidhi Tewari, a 2014-batch Indian Foreign Service (IFS) officer, has been appointed as the private secretary to Prime Minister Narendra Modi. She is currently serving as deputy secretary in the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) and has experience in key administrative and diplomatic roles. Her appointment was approved by the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet on a co-terminus basis, as per a Personnel Ministry order issued on March 29.

The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet has approved the appointment of Nidhi Tewari, a 2014-batch Indian Foreign Service (IFS) officer, as the Private Secretary to the Prime Minister. Currently serving as Deputy Secretary in the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO), she will assume the role at Level 12 of the pay matrix with immediate effect. Her appointment is on a co-terminus basis or until further orders, whichever comes earlier, according to the official order.

About Nidhi Tewari

Nidhi Tewari secured the 96th rank in the 2013 Civil Services Examination. She hails from Mehmurganj in Varanasi, the parliamentary constituency of Prime Minister Narendra Modi since 2014.

Tewari has been serving in the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) for over three years. She was appointed as an Under Secretary in 2022 and later promoted to Deputy Secretary on January 6, 2023. Before joining the PMO, she worked in the Ministry of External Affairs, handling the Disarmament and International Security Affairs Division.

Before clearing the Civil Services Examination, Tewari worked as an Assistant Commissioner (Commercial Tax) in Varanasi, preparing for the exam alongside her job. At the PMO, she has been part of the ‘Foreign and Security’ vertical, which reports to National Security Advisor Ajit Doval.

At the PMO, Nidhi Tewari handled key areas, including External Affairs, Atomic Energy, Security Affairs, and matters related to the state of Rajasthan. So far, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has had two Private Secretaries: Vivek Kumar and Hardik Satishchandra Shah.
