Prime Minister Narendra Modi has sent his greetings to Bangladesh on its National Day through a letter to Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus. In the letter, he marked the importance of the 1971 Liberation War, saying it laid the foundation for the strong bond between India and Bangladesh.

PM Modi also assured Yunus that India is committed to strengthening its ties with Bangladesh. However, he emphasized that the relationship should be based on mutual respect’s interests and concerns.

PM Modi said, "I extend my greetings to you and the people of Bangladesh on your National Day. This day reflects our shared history and sacrifices, which have strengthened our partnership. The spirit of Bangladesh’s Liberation War continues to guide our relationship, helping it grow in many areas and benefit our people."

PM Modi further stated, "We are committed to strengthening this partnership, guided by our shared goals of peace, stability, and prosperity, and built on mutual respect's interests and concerns."

President Droupadi Murmu also extended her greetings to Bangladesh’s President, Mohammed Shahabuddin, reaffirming India’s support for a democratic and progressive Bangladesh. "On behalf of the government, the people of India, and myself, I extend my warm greetings and best wishes to Your Excellency and the friendly people of Bangladesh on your National Day," Murmu said.

President Droupadi Murmu focused on the strong and multi-dimensional ties between India and Bangladesh, stating, "Our cooperation extends across various sectors, including trade, connectivity, development, energy, education, culture, and people-to-people exchanges. India remains committed to supporting a democratic, stable, and progressive Bangladesh."

Bangladesh celebrates its National Day on March 26, marking its 1971 declaration of independence from Pakistan. India was among the first nations to recognize Bangladesh as an independent state, following Bhutan, on December 6, 1971. In March 2021, Prime Minister Narendra Modi designated this date as India-Bangladesh Friendship Day (Moitree Diwas).
