A week, after Raja Raghuvanshi’s body was found in a gorge in Meghalaya, his wife Sonam, appeared at a police station in Uttar Pradesh’s Ghazipur and said that she was drugged and brought to Ghazipur without her knowledge. She claimed someone did this to make her look like a victim. The couple had gone missing on May 23 during their honeymoon. On June 2, Raja’s body was found, and police began searching for Sonam. Her sudden appearance led to a deeper investigation, revealing shocking details about the case.
Mr. Yash, Additional Director General of Police said that Sonam tried to act like a victim. She told the police that someone had drugged her and brought her to Ghazipur. She even told her family where she was, knowing the police would come looking for her. Around 3 am on Monday, she called her family and said she was at a roadside dhaba on the Ghazipur-Varanasi road. Her family then informed the Madhya Pradesh police, who contacted the local police, and Sonam was found. She was taken for a medical checkup and sent to a One-Stop Centre. Now, the Meghalaya police are questioning her and completing the legal steps.
Police say Sonam was in a relationship with another man, Raj Kushwaha. They believe the two planned and carried out the murder of her husband, Raja. Sonam surrendered on June 8 under pressure, and later both she and Raj were arrested. Mr. Yash added, “Sonam was a poor planner. She didn’t understand how the police worked and thought pretending to be a victim would save her, but it didn’t. Meghalaya police did a great job and are now leading the investigation. We will help if they need us.”
Uttar Pradesh Police are not part of the investigation, which is being handled by Meghalaya Police. A senior UP officer said Sonam, who is now the main suspect, came to Ghazipur alone. CCTV footage and other clues are being checked, and police say the truth will come out soon. The officer also said the case was unusual because it involved careful planning. The body was taken to Meghalaya and dumped in a hard-to-reach area to avoid being caught, but the plan failed.
Raj Kushwaha, who is said to be Sonam's boyfriend, is also a suspect. Raja Raghuvanshi’s brother, Vipul, said Raj used to work for Sonam and that they talked a lot on the phone. While he didn’t directly blame Sonam for the murder, he said she could be involved if Raj was involved. The officer leading the case, SP Vivek Syiem, told NDTV that they have strong evidence against Sonam and Raj. Raja and Sonam got married on May 11 and left for their honeymoon on May 20. The next day, they were in Shillong, Meghalaya’s capital.
