Jammu and Kashmir has entered the 40-day period of extreme winter cold, locally called Chillai Kalan, starting December 21 and lasting until January 31. The period is marked by freezing temperatures, snow-covered landscapes, and frost-covered water bodies.
Many parts of the region, including Srinagar, Anantnag, and Sonamarg, witnessed rainfall and snowfall as Chillai Kalan began. Sonamarg in Ganderbal district experienced its first snowfall of the season on Sunday, turning the area into a picturesque winter wonderland. Vehicles, buildings, and roads were all covered in a thick layer of snow, delighting residents and tourists.
Srinagar recorded a further dip in temperature, reaching -4°C, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD). Dense fog has been reported over areas like Dal Lake, though boat rides and sightseeing continue, giving the city a scenic winter look.

Officials have urged residents and visitors to take precautions against the extreme cold and to stay updated with weather advisories, especially in areas prone to sudden snowfall or icy conditions.
Chillai Kalan, known for its harsh weather, is a reminder of the region’s deep winter traditions and the need for careful preparation during this 40-day period.
