US President Donald Trump and Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke on a phone call on Thursday (Dec 11), the US Ambassador to India, Sergio Gor, confirmed. According to the envoy, PM Modi again showed his support for Trump’s push to end the war in Ukraine. The call comes at a time when both nations are dealing with trade tensions after the US announced 50% tariffs on Indian goods earlier this year, linking it to India’s imports of Russian oil.
Gor wrote on X that, “President Trump spoke with Prime Minister Modi this morning. A GREAT call between two friends. Prime Minister Narendra Modi reiterated his support for the President’s efforts to bring peace to Ukraine.”
A short while earlier, PM Modi also shared details about the phone call. He said the two leaders spoke about the progress in India–US ties and also touched on global and regional issues.
Modi posted on X: “Had a very warm and engaging conversation with President Trump. We reviewed the progress in our bilateral relations and discussed regional and international developments. India and the U.S. will continue to work together for global peace, stability and prosperity.”
This week, both countries held trade discussions in New Delhi. After the meeting, US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer said India’s latest proposal was promising, calling it “the best we’ve ever received as a country”.
Reacting to his comments, India’s Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal said the US should move ahead with signing the agreement. “His happiness is very much welcome. And, I do believe that if they are very happy, they should be signing on the dotted lines,” he said.
Over the past few months, relations between India and the US have hit rough patches. The Trump administration raised tariffs on several Indian products, accusing New Delhi of unfair trade practices and saying that India’s Russian oil purchases were helping fund the Ukraine war.
Despite these issues, both sides say they are continuing to talk and look for ways to work together, as seen in Thursday’s call between the two leaders.
