The government has put 'Wikipedia' on notice asking about its bias and inaccuracies in articles on the web page, according to an ANI report. Centre also questioned Wikipedia, why it shouldn’t be treated as a publisher instead of an intermediary since it has a small editorial group.
The notice was issued amid a legal battle of the firm with ANI in Delhi High Court, in which news agency Asian News International, or ANI, has demanded information about users who made the entries that called ANI "the propaganda tool" of the Indian government.
In the latest court hearing of the case, the judge asked Wikipedia representatives about their claim of being a "free encyclopedia." The court mentioned that since Wikipedia calls itself an "intermediary" and not a "publisher," it cannot refuse to provide the requested information.
As per the Bar and Bench report, Justice Subramonium Prasad has asked Wikipedia, "If you are an intermediary, why are you bothered? If somebody else has edited and that addition is without basis, then it comes down. They are not here to protect.”
In defense of Wikipedia senior advocate Jayant Mehta said, that users were warned that the information on the website comes from secondary sources. However, the court didn't accept this excuse, stating that a disclaimer alone couldn't fully release Wikipedia from responsibility.
Representing ANI, advocate Sidhant Kumar said that no more edits were being allowed on the page and the clarifications from ANI were being ignored. He added, "There's not a single positive thing about me. A group of editors won't allow it.
Although, Wikipedia considers itself a free online encyclopedia where volunteers can create or edit pages on personalities, issues, or various subjects.
