Delhi is seeing a sharp increase in mosquito-borne diseases, especially dengue, according to new data from the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD). The city has reported 1,136 dengue cases so far in 2025, and two confirmed deaths have been linked to the infection.
While the number is lower than the 3,581 cases reported during the same time last year, officials say the rise is still a serious health concern.
The rise in dengue cases has mainly happened in September and October, the months right after the monsoon.
September recorded 208 cases
October (up to October 25) logged 307 cases
In just the last week, 72 new cases were detected
Health experts say that stagnant water, poor sanitation, and disrupted prevention work have allowed mosquitoes to breed more easily in many parts of the city.
A major reason for the spike, officials say, is the nearly one-month-long strike by field workers. These workers usually check homes, test mosquito larvae, and carry out anti-larval spraying to stop mosquito breeding.
The strike has stopped most of these activities at a time when they are needed the most.
October is considered a key month for controlling dengue, and this year’s prevention work has been much lower than last year's.
Malaria and Chikungunya cases also increasing
Dengue is not the only disease spreading.
Malaria cases: 590 so far this year, with 219 in October alone
Chikungunya cases: 120 recorded this year
During inspections of over 3.21 crore houses, officials found 2.18 lakh spots where mosquitoes were breeding.
Actions taken include:
1.43 lakh notices issued
27,959 prosecutions filed
Fines worth nearly ₹19.6 lakh collected
Authorities are urging residents to help control mosquito breeding by:
Keeping their surroundings clean
Removing standing water from containers, coolers, or buckets
Allowing health staff to inspect when they visit
Health officials say community participation is very important to prevent the situation from getting worse.
