The Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in New Delhi, one of India’s most famous sports venues, is likely to be taken down and replaced with a modern Sports City. According to the Sports Ministry, this new project will be spread across 102 acres and will include world-class facilities for athletes. The plan is part of India’s long-term goal to host the Olympic Games in 2036.
Officials have said that they are currently studying how countries like Qatar and Australia have built modern sports complexes. These countries have created advanced, multi-purpose stadiums and training centers that can host large international events. India wants to use similar ideas for its own project. However, there is no fixed timeline for when the construction will begin. Work will start only after the studies are complete and the final design gets approved.
The Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium has a rich history. It was originally built in 1982 for the Asian Games and later renovated for the 2010 Commonwealth Games. The stadium can seat around 60,000 people and has hosted several major events, including national athletics championships, football matches, concerts, and government ceremonies like Independence Day celebrations. For over four decades, it has been one of the most important sports landmarks in India and the main training venue for national-level athletes.
The new Sports City will include high-performance training centers, modern competition arenas, and athlete-friendly facilities built to meet international standards. It aims to support both professional and upcoming athletes by providing them with advanced infrastructure, technology, and coaching spaces.
If approved, this will be one of India’s biggest and most ambitious projects to modernize its sports infrastructure. The government hopes that the new Sports City will not only help athletes perform better on the global stage but also strengthen India’s chances of hosting major international tournaments like the Olympics in the future.
