To boost to cleaner air and green mobility, the Delhi government has tabled a total ban on two-wheelers running on petrol, diesel, and CNG in the national capital from August 15, 2026. The proposal is part of the draft Electric Vehicle (EV) Policy 2.0 under which 95% of all new vehicle registrations would be electric by 2027.

The draft policy, expected to be officially released shortly, has been examined by Delhi Transport Minister Pankaj Kumar Singh. It establishes a detailed blueprint for the city's shift to electric mobility and aims at private as well as public transport modes.

As per the draft, there will be no fresh registrations of CNG-operated auto-rickshaws from August 15 this year, and old permits will not be renewed after August 15, 2025. All such permits will be issued only in the form of e-auto permits. Moreover, CNG auto-rickshaws older than 10 years will be compulsorily replaced or converted to electric battery systems.

The policy also suggests phasing out garbage trucks running on fossil fuels, which are heavily used by civic authorities for the collection of solid waste.

All intra-city buses of the Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC) and the Delhi Integrated Multi-Modal Transit System (DIMTS) will be made electric. After implementation, only e-buses will be purchased for intra-city operations, while BS VI buses will be permitted for inter-state operations.

An official statement from the Delhi Transport Ministry noted that the draft policy aims to reinforce Delhi’s position as the leader in EV adoption across India.

How will this impact the residents?

The proposed policy will directly affect lakhs of owners of two-wheelers in the city. On implementation, all petrol, diesel, and CNG-run scooters and bikes will be prohibited from use from August 15, 2026. Even though private vehicles have not been included in the present draft, the thrust for electric mobility implies that more regulations in the near term may be put in place.

Car owners, particularly those in the transport and delivery industries, are encouraged to start preparing for the shift. The ultimate policy is likely to provide information on subsidies, scrappage incentives, and financing schemes for the adoption of electric vehicles.
