From the 2026–2027 academic session, Delhi schools will only admit children who are six years or older to Class 1. This new rule has been issued by the Directorate of Education (DoE) in line with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020.

Under the NEP’s new 5+3+3+4 education structure, the early years of learning will now include three years of pre-primary education before Class 1. As a result, children will begin their schooling with nursery, lower KG, and upper KG, and only move to Class 1 after completing these three years and turning six.

The updated education structure will replace the existing 10+2 model with a 5+3+3+4 system. In the new format, school education will be structured into four stages: foundational learning for five years, preparatory and middle stages of three years each, and secondary education lasting four years.

According to a circular issued by the Directorate of Education (DoE), children will begin nursery (also known as pre-school or 'Bal Vatika') at age three, move to lower KG (pre-school 2) at age four, and upper KG (pre-school 3) at age five. Admission to Class 1 will only be allowed when the child turns six, starting from the 2026–27 academic session. The circular also mentioned that the names of pre-primary classes are flexible and can be changed if needed.

The DoE has instructed all government, government-aided, and recognised unaided private schools to implement the new age criteria and foundational learning structure. To ensure a smooth and effective transition, the Directorate is adopting a participatory approach by seeking suggestions and feedback from all stakeholders—this includes parents, teachers, students, school authorities, experts, and the general public.

As part of this inclusive process, the DoE is inviting public input on the proposed changes to help shape the implementation plan. All feedback must be submitted by July 10, as mentioned in the official notice.
