Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta was attacked at her residence during a public hearing (‘Jansunwai’) this morning and has been admitted to hospital. According to BJP leaders, the attacker was a man in his 30s who had disguised himself as a complainant to enter the meeting.
As soon as he got close to the Chief Minister, he slapped her and pulled her hair. Security personnel quickly caught hold of him and handed him over to the police. He is now being questioned to find out his motive.
After the incident, the Chief Minister was immediately taken to the hospital for treatment. Senior officers of Delhi Police also rushed to her residence to review the security arrangements and prevent any further issues.
The weekly ‘Jansunwai’ is a public meeting where the Chief Minister listens to complaints and suggestions from citizens. Senior BJP leader Harish Khurana said, “One person present at the meeting attacked the Chief Minister. Doctors are examining her now. We strongly condemn this attack and demand a proper investigation to check if it was politically motivated.”
The BJP has claimed there may be a political conspiracy behind the incident. Delhi minister Manjinder Singh Sirsa said the Chief Minister’s opponents cannot tolerate the work she is doing on the ground.
Opposition party Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) also condemned the attack. Former CM and AAP leader Atishi said, “Violence has no place in a democracy. We hope the Delhi Police takes strict action against the culprit and that the Chief Minister recovers soon.”
Police sources confirmed that an inquiry will be conducted into this serious security breach. Delhi Police Commissioner SBK Singh will personally monitor the probe.
