The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has postponed its Legislative Party meeting in Delhi from Monday, February 17, to Wednesday, February 19, sources told news agency ANI. The meeting will now take place at the Delhi BJP State Office.

Meanwhile, the swearing-in ceremony of the new Chief Minister of Delhi has also been rescheduled. Instead of February 19, the event will now take place on February 20, sources said.

Meeting and swearing-in date changed

A source confirmed, “The BJP Legislature Party meeting scheduled for tomorrow, 17th February, has been postponed. Now this meeting will be held on 19th February. The swearing-in ceremony of the Chief Minister will also be held on 20th February instead of 18th February.”

Earlier on Friday, the BJP had assured that the name of the new Delhi Chief Minister would be announced soon. Party spokesperson Ajay Alok said, "Prime Minister Narendra Modi is returning (from his foreign visit) by tonight. There will be a meeting of our parliamentary board tomorrow or the day after. Delhi's new CM will be before you."

According to sources, the new Chief Minister is expected to be sworn in on February 19. However, now the date has been pushed to February 20.

BJP’s big return in Delhi after 27 years

The upcoming swearing-in ceremony will mark the BJP’s return to power in Delhi after 27 years. The BJP's legislative party meeting will take place a day before the grand event.

Preparations to form the new government will speed up once PM Modi returns from his international visit to France and the United States.

Top BJP leaders, including Union Home Minister Amit Shah and BJP president JP Nadda, will finalise key decisions related to the new government. These include selecting the new chief minister, the council of ministers, and possibly appointing one or two deputy chief ministers.

Delhi assembly election results 2025

In the Delhi assembly elections held on February 5, the BJP won 48 out of 70 seats. The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), which ruled Delhi for two consecutive terms, was reduced to 22 seats. The Congress, on the other hand, failed to secure a single seat for the third consecutive time. The election results were announced on February 8.

Who will be the next Delhi CM?

Several names are being considered for the Chief Minister's position. The leading contenders include Parvesh Verma, who defeated AAP’s national convenor Arvind Kejriwal, and Ramesh Bidhuri, who was defeated by former Chief Minister Atishi from the Kalkaji seat.

Other possible candidates include BJP MP Manoj Tiwari, Kapil Mishra, Ashish Sood, Rekha Gupta, and Vijender Gupta.

In the past, the BJP has often chosen lesser-known faces for the chief minister’s role, keeping the suspense alive until the last moment.
