India’s defence budget may get a big increase soon. Sources say the government is planning to spend more money on new weapons, ammunition, and technology, especially after the success of Operation Sindoor. A proposal for an additional Rs 50,000 crore has been made. This amount could be added through a supplementary budget during the winter session of Parliament.
This extra money is likely to be used for the needs of the armed forces, important equipment purchases, and for research and development in defence technology.
Earlier this year, the Union Budget allocated Rs 6.81 lakh crore for defence. This is the highest-ever defence budget and is 9.53% more than last year’s allocation. In fact, since the NDA government came to power in 2014, the defence budget has nearly tripled. In 2014-15, it was Rs 2.29 lakh crore. Now, it has reached Rs 6.81 lakh crore, which is 13.45% of the total Union Budget.
The boost in defence planning comes after Operation Sindoor, where Indian forces destroyed nine terror camps deep inside Pakistan without crossing the border. The operation showed India’s strong defence capabilities.
During the fight with Pakistan, India used its multi-layered air defence systems. These systems stopped almost all enemy missiles and drones. India used several air defence systems, including the long-range Russian S-400 'Triumf', the Barak-8 medium-range SAM system, and the Indian-made Akash system. Other battle-tested systems like the Pechora, OSA-AK, and LLAD guns were also used.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi praised the success of Operation Sindoor and highlighted the role of Indian-made weapons.
He said on May 12, "During this operation, the credibility of our Made-in-India weapons was firmly established. The world now recognises that the time for Made-in-India defence equipment in 21st-century warfare has arrived."
