The 24-hour ban on the Char Dham Yatra was lifted on Monday, allowing devotees to resume their pilgrimage, officials confirmed. Garhwal Divisional Commissioner Vinay Shankar Pandey stated that District Magistrates along the route have been instructed to halt vehicle movement if weather conditions worsen in their areas to ensure the safety of pilgrims.
The Yatra had been temporarily stopped on Sunday after heavy rainfall and a cloudburst triggered a major landslide near Barkot. This tragic incident led to the deaths of two workers and left seven others missing. Rescue teams are actively searching for the missing individuals.
According to Uttarkashi Police, the cloudburst and landslide occurred approximately 4 km ahead of Paligad on the Yamunotri National Highway, close to Silai Band. Multiple agencies, including the police, fire services, health department, and public works teams, are engaged in ongoing rescue and relief efforts.
Uttarkashi District Magistrate Prashant Arya reported that the damaged section of the Barkot-Yamunotri road before Silai Band has been successfully repaired and made smooth to facilitate movement. Efforts to fix other damaged portions of the route are still underway. In addition to the road repairs, Arya confirmed that the 33 KV power line in the affected area has been restored, while work on repairing the 11 KV line is progressing.
The two deceased workers have been identified as Kewal Bisht, 43, from Nepal’s Rajapur district, and Duje Lal, 55, from Pilibhit, Uttar Pradesh. Meanwhile, heavy rainfall also affected Chamba town on Monday.
Despite the challenges posed by harsh weather, authorities are working tirelessly to restore normalcy and ensure the safety of pilgrims and locals. Search operations for the missing workers continue with the involvement of the NDRF, SDRF, police, and revenue teams.
