Three people have died, and several areas in Jammu and Kashmir are facing strong winds and heavy rainfall led to flash floods and landslides on Thursday. The Srinagar-Jammu National Highway, an important road linking the Valley to the rest of the country, has been closed.

Videos from the scene show trucks stuck on roads and some vehicles buried under piles of mud and rocks.

Ramban district has been hit especially hard. Strong rain and wind uprooted several trees, which blocked roads and damaged power lines. People in the area are facing power cuts, and movement on the roads has become very difficult.

A sudden and powerful thunderstorm, followed by rain, caused flash floods, making the situation even worse.

Parshottam Gupta, the former Sarpanch of Sateni Panchayat in Udhampur, shared how badly his area has been affected.

"I have inspected my Panchayat, and there were several trees uprooted. The traffic and electricity have been affected in the area. After 4-5 years, such strong winds have affected the area," he told ANI.

The weather department said that an active western disturbance is behind the heavy rainfall and storms that caused the destruction.

Nearly 40 houses were damaged in Dharam Kund village of Ramban, and police teams had to rescue over 100 villagers. Several landslides and mudslides were also reported in many places between Nashri and Banihal, along the Jammu-Srinagar highway.

Officials have said that traffic has been completely restricted on the highway due to conditions like falling rocks, mudslides, and landslides.

A traffic department spokesperson explained,
“Traffic on the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway was stopped due to landslides, mudslides, and shooting stones.”

He also requested people not to travel on the highway until the road is safe and the weather improves.
