The Municipal Corporation of Chandigarh has announced new rules under The Municipal Corporation Chandigarh Pet and Community Dogs Bye-Laws, 2025. As part of these new regulations, six dog breeds have been banned within the city for public safety. These breeds include the American Bulldog, American Pitbull, Bull Terrier, Cane Corso, Dogo Argentino, and Rottweiler.
According to the notification, these breeds are considered aggressive or dangerous, and therefore, no new registrations will be allowed for them after the bye-laws come into effect. However, people who already own any of these dogs will be allowed to keep them, provided they register their pets within a 45-day buffer period. After this time, anyone found breeding, selling, or keeping these banned dogs without registration will face penalties, including the possible seizure of the animal.
Owners who already have these breeds must ensure that their dogs are always muzzled and kept on a leash while outside. They are also advised to get them trained by registered dog trainers to prevent any aggressive behavior. The new bye-laws also make dog registration mandatory for all pet owners in Chandigarh. The number of dogs allowed in a home depends on the size of the house. For example, one dog can be kept in a five-marla house, and up to four dogs in a one-kanal house.
Pet owners are prohibited from taking their dogs to certain public areas like Sukhna Lake, Rose Garden, Rock Garden, Leisure Valley, Bougainvillea Garden, and other places notified by the authorities. They must also ensure that their pets do not defecate in public places. If a dog does so, the owner must clean it up properly using a poop bag, or they will face a fine.
Dog breeders, pet shop owners, trainers, and groomers will now have to register with the Municipal Corporation as well. The rules also apply to people who feed stray dogs, feeding must take place only at designated spots to maintain cleanliness and public safety. The civic body will have the power to impound dogs that are left unattended, cause excessive noise, or roam freely in public spaces. Any violations of these bye-laws will result in fines or penalties as per the rules.
