BSF constable Purnam Kumar Shaw, who had been in Pakistan Rangers' custody since April 23, was handed back to Indian authorities on Wednesday morning. The handover took place peacefully at 10:30 am at the Joint Check Post in Attari, Amritsar, following standard procedures, as confirmed by the BSF. Shaw, a resident of West Bengal, is currently being questioned by security officials.

The BSF confirmed that Constable Purnam Kumar Shaw was handed over to Indian authorities at the Attari-Wagah border at 10:30 am. Shaw had accidentally crossed into Pakistani territory on April 23, 2025, while on duty in the Ferozepur sector and was taken into custody by the Pakistan Rangers.

Following Shaw's return, the Trinamool Congress took to X (formerly Twitter), saying, "Home at last. After days of anxiety and uncertainty, BSF Jawan Purnam Kumar Shaw has finally been repatriated. West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee personally reached out to Constable Purnam Kumar Shaw’s wife several times during his time in Pakistan's custody, offering reassurance and support. After his safe return, the Trinamool Congress said they hope Shaw recovers fully from the trauma and finds peace with his family.

BSF jawan Purnam Kumar Shaw, serving in the 182nd Battalion, was detained by Pakistan Rangers on April 23 after inadvertently crossing the International Border near Ferozepur, Punjab. Shaw was on duty near the border fence in uniform and carrying his service rifle when he moved to a shaded area to rest. Unknowingly, he crossed into Pakistani territory, where he was captured by the Pakistan Rangers.

After his detention, the Indian Army and Pakistan Rangers held a flag meeting to resolve the issue and ensure Shaw's safe return.

It’s worth noting that Shaw crossed the border just a day after the deadly terror attack in Pahalgam on April 22, in which 26 people were killed when terrorists opened fire in the Baisaran Valley.
