Mumbai may soon get its own Mumbai Eye, a giant Ferris wheel like the London Eye. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has included this proposal in its budget presented on Tuesday. For the past 15 years, several attempts to build such a structure in Mumbai have failed, but BMC is making another effort to turn it into a major tourist attraction.

The BMC Budget 2025 includes a plan to build the Mumbai Eye through a Public-Private Partnership (PPP), though the location is yet to be decided. Inspired by the London Eye, this massive 135-meter (443-foot) Ferris wheel will have air-conditioned, sealed cabins, each accommodating 25 people. The wheel will rotate, giving visitors a stunning view of the city.

The idea of the Mumbai Eye, offering stunning city views, was first proposed by the Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) in 2011, but it never took off. In 2023, the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) revived the plan, suggesting the Bandra Reclamation promenade as the location. By May 2023, the agency had even invited bids for a project management consultant and started work on a technical feasibility report and the tendering process.

However, the proposal faced strong resistance from Bandra Reclamation residents, who raised concerns about increased traffic congestion and environmental restrictions on reclaimed land imposed by the Ministry of Environment and Forests. Due to these objections and regulatory challenges, the project was ultimately shelved.

The BMC will be the third agency to try and bring the Mumbai Eye to reality. Inspired by the success of the London Eye, which has led to similar attractions worldwide, the Mumbai Eye aims to become a new global landmark. Featuring air-conditioned, sealed passenger capsules that hold 25 people each, it will offer visitors a 360-degree view of the city, providing an elevated look at Mumbai’s vibrant landscape.
