The police in Itanagar, Arunachal Pradesh, have found a big vehicle theft racket and recovered 57 expensive stolen cars. These vehicles are worth over ₹30 crore. The police also arrested the five main people involved in the case.
The stolen cars include luxury models like Audi, Ford Endeavour, Toyota Fortuner, and Mahindra Thar.
According to the police, these cars were stolen from places like Delhi, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, and other nearby states. A senior police officer, Jummar Basar, said that this is the biggest recovery of stolen cars by any police station in India. The investigation started on July 2, and since then, the police have found all 57 stolen cars from different parts of the Itanagar Capital Region.
The gang used to target high-end vehicles, mostly from Delhi and its nearby areas. After stealing the cars, they worked with local brokers who changed the engine and chassis numbers. They also made fake registration papers to make the cars look legal and then transported them to Arunachal Pradesh for resale. Mr. Basar said the police believe the gang may have international links.
They found some clues in digital money transfers and patterns in cross-border activities. The police are now trying to track where the money went and if any foreign groups were involved. As a safety measure, the police have asked people to be careful while buying second-hand cars. They advised checking all documents properly and confirming the vehicle’s history with the authorities to avoid buying a stolen car.
