An officer of the Assam Civil Service (ACS) was arrested on Monday for allegedly holding wealth far beyond her known income. The Chief Minister’s Special Vigilance Cell carried out raids at different locations linked to the officer, Nupur Bora, and recovered large amounts of cash and valuables.

Officials said Rs 92 lakh in cash and jewellery worth nearly Rs 1 crore were seized from her Guwahati residence. Another Rs 10 lakh cash was found at her rented house in Barpeta.

Nupur Bora, a resident of Golaghat, joined the Assam Civil Service in 2019. She was serving as a circle officer in Goroimari under Kamrup district at the time of her arrest.

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma revealed that Bora was under surveillance for the past six months following complaints about her alleged role in land-related irregularities.

“This officer had transferred Hindu land to suspicious individuals in exchange for money when she was posted in the Barpeta revenue circle. We have taken strict action against her,” Mr Sarma said.

He added that there is widespread corruption in revenue circles in minority-dominated areas.”

Alongside Bora, the Vigilance Cell also raided the home of her alleged aide, Lat Mandal Surajit Deka, an employee at the Barpeta revenue circle office. He is accused of acquiring several land properties across Barpeta while colluding with Bora during her posting there.
