An Air India plane flying from Ahmedabad to London’s Gatwick Airport crashed after takeoff on June 12, 2025. The Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner, flight AI171, with 242 passengers on board. The plane had reached about 825 feet when it lost altitude and crashed between 1 pm and 2 pm.

Air India confirmed the crash in a short statement, saying they are still checking the details. Smoke was seen rising from the crash site. Over 20 ambulances and rescue teams went to the area. Many injured passengers were taken to hospitals. Medical and fire teams are working at the site.

The flight was being flown by Captain Sumeet Sabharwal, who has 8,200 hours of flying experience. He was supported by First Officer Clive Kundar, who has 1,100 hours of flying experience. The plane took off from Runway 23 at 1:39 PM (Indian time). Soon after takeoff, the pilots sent out a mayday call asking for emergency help. After the Mayday message, the plane stopped responding to messages from air traffic control. Just a few moments later, the plane crashed outside the airport area. People nearby and airport staff saw thick black smoke rising from the crash site, showing that a fire had broken out after the crash.

What government said

Roads near the airport have been closed to allow rescue work. Traffic has been redirected to avoid blocks. India’s Civil Aviation Minister, Ram Mohan Naidu, said he was shocked and is watching the situation. He said all aviation and emergency teams have been told to act quickly and help the people involved.

London’s Gatwick Airport and Air India’s owner, Tata Group, also shared their statements. Air India Chairman N. Chandrasekaran said the focus is on helping the people and families involved. A help centre has been set up to give updates and support families looking for information.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke to Home Minister Amit Shah and Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu after the Air India crash in Ahmedabad. He asked them to visit the site and ensure all help is provided. Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel said he was saddened by the incident. He confirmed rescue work was ongoing and ordered quick medical help for the injured.

He also said a green corridor is being prepared to move the injured, and Amit Shah has promised full support, including NDRF help. Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu said he is deeply shocked and is closely monitoring the situation. He has asked all emergency teams to act quickly and make sure medical and rescue aid reaches the crash site without delay.
