This morning, Delhi and nearby areas experienced strong winds, dust storms, and heavy rain. Because of this, about 120 flights were delayed at the Delhi airport. Some flights couldn’t land and were sent to Jaipur and Ahmedabad instead. Flights from Bangalore and Pune to Delhi were also affected. On average, flights were 21 minutes late to land and over an hour late to take off. More than 20 flights are still delayed.
In a sad incident, a woman and her three children died in Dwarka when a tree fell on their room due to strong winds. The airport staff is working hard to help travellers, and airlines are asking people to check their flight status before leaving for the airport.
Air India said that some of its flights going to and from Delhi are either delayed or sent to other cities because of the bad weather. This may affect their overall flight schedule, but they are trying their best to reduce the delays. Also, about 15 to 20 trains got delayed in the Delhi area after trees fell on electric wires due to strong winds, causing problems for railway services.

Many areas in Delhi like Dwarka, Khanpur, South Extension, Minto Road, Lajpat Nagar, and Moti Bagh saw waterlogging after heavy rain. Videos and photos from these areas show roads filled with water. The strong winds also caused several trees to fall or lose large branches. The full damage to buildings and property is still being checked.
People are being advised to stay indoors and avoid going out unless necessary due to the weather. The temperature in Delhi dropped to 19.8°C. According to the India Meteorological Department, the city is expected to face heavy rain, storms, and winds reaching speeds of 70–80 km/h.
According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), in just the last three hours, Delhi received heavy rainfall. The Safdarjung area got 77 mm of rain, Lodhi Road recorded 78 mm, Palam saw 30 mm, Najafgarh had 19.5 mm, and Pitampura received 32 mm.
The IMD has issued a yellow alert for Delhi till Saturday, warning of heavy rain, thunderstorms, and strong winds. On Wednesday evening, the sky turned dark and cloudy. The city recorded a maximum temperature of 38.1°C, which is slightly lower than the normal for this time of year.
This sudden rain is a welcome break from the heat, especially since the IMD had earlier warned that most parts of India will see hotter-than-usual temperatures in May. However, the frequent storms expected this month should help keep the temperatures from getting as high as they did in May 2024. Rainfall in North India is likely to be above normal this May, over 109% of the usual average of 64.1 mm, according to the IMD.
