The Supreme Court has decided to consider YouTuber Ranveer Allahbadia's request for the release of his passport only after two weeks, once the investigation into his controversial joke is concluded. A similar plea by YouTuber Ashish Chanchalani for the release of his passport has also not been entertained by the court.
Justices Suryakant and N Kotishwar Singh stated that Allahbadia's request will be reviewed after the investigation into his remarks in a now-deleted episode of 'India's Got Latent' is completed. The court also mentioned that Allahbadia may need to participate in the investigation.
YouTubers Ranveer Allahbadia and Ashish Chanchalani became involved in a major controversy last month after Allahbadia made a joke about his parents, which quickly went viral. The remark sparked strong criticism, leading to cases being filed against Allahbadia, Chanchalani, and others in Mumbai and Guwahati.
The Supreme Court had previously granted interim protection to YouTuber Ranveer Allahbadia but criticized him for his inappropriate language on the show. The court remarked, "There is something very dirty in his mind, which has been vomited by him on the program." Initially, the court had prohibited Allahbadia from airing any more episodes, but it later lifted the restriction, allowing him to continue his shows "subject to morality and decency."
However, the court barred Allahbadia from leaving the country without permission. Allahbadia later requested a modification of the conditions, arguing that the requirement to deposit his passport was affecting his livelihood.
On Tuesday’s hearing, the Supreme Court noted that Ranveer Allahbadia had complied with the investigation process. "The petitioner (Allahbadia) was summoned and appeared before the NCW, where his statement was recorded. He also joined the Guwahati police station's investigation and gave an undertaking to ensure his show maintains decency," the bench remarked.
However, the court made it clear that Allahbadia's request for his passport release to travel abroad would be considered only after the investigation concludes. The Maharashtra government informed the court that the investigation will be completed in two weeks, with the next hearing scheduled for April 21.
